Uncovering Mobuoy
Event Description

Discover the hidden story of Northern Ireland’s Mobuoy waste crisis, one of the most significant environmental scandals in the region’s history with insights from the creators of the BBC Buried podcast, scientists, and local activists.

Stretching back over a decade, the Mobuoy site near the River Faughan in Derry became the site of an illegal waste dump, holding an estimated one million tonnes of waste. What began as a local concern quickly escalated into a major environmental disaster, raising urgent questions about oversight, accountability, and the environmental future of Northern Ireland.

This panel discussion brings together the creators of the acclaimed BBC Buried podcast, which exposed the scale of the crisis to a wider audience, alongside leading scientists and local activists. Together, they will delve into the environmental impact of the Mobuoy site, explore the fight for transparency, and reflect on the ongoing efforts to seek justice and clean up the affected landscape.

How did such a massive illegal operation go unchecked? What does the contamination mean for local communities and waterways? And where do we go from here in holding those responsible to account and ensuring this cannot happen again?

Join us for this essential conversation as we uncover the realities of the Mobuoy waste crisis and discuss what can be done to safeguard Northern Ireland’s environment for future generations.
