Discover History and Myth Through Wimmelbilders
Event Description

Explore the history and myths of historically significant buildings through drawing with pen.

The workshop will teach the basics on how to draw in the detailed inked style of local artist Laura McKenzie Atkins. This will involve teaching how to use ink pens, what to look for in interesting buildings, how to take complex buildings and simplify them for a black and white pen drawing. As well as how to add the whimsical feeling of her art, by adding in local myths, legends, and historical characters. Drawings will be made referencing large photographic prints of buildings and places of historical significance as well as making use of historical resources about the important events and characters from each.

Biography

Laura McKenzie Atkins is an artist living in Belfast who is also an Art Technician at Belfast Royal Academy where she runs art workshops for both the students and the staff. Her lifelong love of history and castles began in her home town of Carrickfergus with her childhood landmark of Carrickfergus Castle. The foundation of her art comes from a love of old things, the old castles, the old stories, and the old art styles. Her wimmelbilders (a German word for teeming picture) aims at a contemporary take on the mediaeval style of etching. Each piece aims to be a playful interpretation of castles and folklore and to provide a new way to interact with history and myth.
