What is Life?
Event Description

Most who have thought deeply about what life is came from a background in physics, perhaps because life presents a profound puzzle in physics.

That’s because living systems show a wilfulness and purpose that seems to defy the laws of cause and effect that otherwise rule all things and happenings. Dr Keith Farnsworth of Queen's University Belfast will present a new explanation of life, founded on this ‘weird wilfulness’. He will guide the audience through the physics, biology and philosophy of what it means to be alive. We may discuss the implications for artificial systems and life elsewhere in the universe. The talk will make some advanced concepts accessible and reveal a new way of looking at life, the universe and everything.
