Future Focus Schools Challenge: What will you invent?
7th September 2026
Delivered by Nerve Centre, MATRIX NI and Northern Ireland Science Festival, the challenge invites school teams to imagine Northern Ireland in 2050, identify a problem we may face and design an innovative app, product, service or invention to help solve it.
Teams can explore one of five themes:

Clean and Green

Health and Wellbeing
-
Joined Up and Connected
-
Safe, Protected and Secure
-
Inclusive and Shared Value
Successful teams will be invited to a special showcase and awards event at Nerve Centre, Derry~Londonderry, on Thursday 26 November, with prizes available for participating schools.
Entries close on Friday 6 November 2026.
Who Can Take Part?
The challenge is open to schools across Northern Ireland in two categories:
- Key Stage 2: Years 5–7
- Key Stage 3: Years 8–10
Pupils should work together as a team to develop their solution, with teachers supporting and facilitating the process.
What Do Schools Need to Submit?
Pupils/teams can bring their ideas to life using sketches, models, LEGO, digital designs or other creative materials. Then schools must then submit a two-minute video explaining the problem, who it affects, their proposed solution, how it works and why it would make a difference. Submit here
