Training in data analysis using the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS)

Training in data analysis using the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS)
Event Details

Data analysis is an important proficiency for those entering further/higher education and the workplace. It cuts across many disciplines and demonstrates transferable skills. We have therefore developed this interactive session for students studying subjects like Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Geography, Sociology, or Computer Science at A-Level to introduce them to the analysis of large datasets using R. We use a synthetic dataset that replicates some aspects of the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS). This is a broad database of people and their major life events since the 1990s which covers 28% of the NI population.

It links Census information from 1981 to 2021 with other administrative data such as vital events, school data, property information, health card registrations, weather and pollution (www.nils.ac.uk). It is used by governmental and academic researchers to provide insights into the N.I. population. The session thus also introduces students to the concept of large-scale population-level data.
