How will Generative AI Change Science and Society?

How will Generative AI Change Science and Society?
Event Details

AI has the potential to have enormous societal and economic advantages with unknown downsides. If we want to benefit from AI technology and improve the world, we must also consider its social implications and challenges.

Even though it is still in its early stages, generative artificial intelligence, or GenAI, is showing signs of being able to support scientific research across a wide range of topics. The widespread use of ChatGPT serves as yet another reminder that we are living in the "Exponential Age." We have a plethora of amazing opportunities in front of us, but there are also valid public concerns raised globally about issues like AI safety. GenAI's impact on science is still evolving, just as it is in business and other domains. However, knowledge of dangers, such as scientific inaccuracies and lack of transparency, is growing. It is essential to protect against bias and to provide fair appraisal, privacy, security, copyright, and ownership. Current and future consumers will also need proof that models were trained on reputable sources and can be used in a reliable and trustworthy manner. How GenAI will provide value to economies and communities and how to capture and share it fairly are also hot important themes.

On February 23, 2024, the Ulster’s Workshop of on GenAI in the NI Science Festival will bring together speakers, displays, demos, and screenings in an exciting programme of events. You are invited to join academics, students, alumni, and Ulster's cultural and industry partners to learn more about breakthroughs in GenAI, as well as the challenges and opportunities that it presents at this key juncture in humanity's evolution. We are excited to welcome everyone, from CEOs to students.
