Job Title: Accounts Officer (Part-Time)
Hours: 1 day per week (8 hours per week, with occasional additional hours during peak periods of the year)
Contract: Freelance. (Initial review period of 3 months to assess mutual fit and deliverables)
Location: Hybrid – remote working and at NI Science Festival office in the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast
Fee: £15 per hour (paid monthly by invoice)
About NI Science Festival
The NI Science Festival is an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), delivering over 300 events across Northern Ireland each February. The festival works with schools, universities, community organisations, and cultural venues to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers. We also run a year round programme of other engagement projects and events.
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Accounts Officer to support the financial administration of the festival. Working closely with the Festival Director and wider team, the Accounts Officer will ensure our finances are well-managed, accurate, and compliant with funder and organisational requirements.
This role is ideal for someone with a background in finance or bookkeeping who enjoys working independently and has a passion for supporting arts, education, or not-for-profit organisations.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using Xero
Process invoices, payments, and staff/contractor expenses
Reconcile bank statements and maintain petty cash records
Assist in preparing monthly financial reports for management and board
Support preparation of budgets and cash flow forecasts
Ensure compliance with funder reporting and audit requirements
Liaise with external accountants for annual accounts and reporting
Maintain clear records for funders (e.g. National Lottery Heritage Fund, Belfast City Council)
Essential Criteria
Proven experience in bookkeeping, accounts administration, or finance role
Familiarity with accounting software (e.g. Xero)
Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Understanding of financial compliance and reporting
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable Criteria
Experience working with charities, CICs or arts/cultural organisations
Knowledge of grant funding processes and financial reporting requirements
