Event Description
This presentation by Bronagh Murray (Archaeology 2030 Project Officer) will explore the iconography of dogs found in the archaeological record across Ireland, with focus on a collection of possible prehistoric sculptures located in Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral, Armagh which depict creatures assumed to represent dogs. Examples of early medieval hunt scenes depicted on high crosses, illuminated manuscripts and the rich body of myth and folklore surrounding them will also be examined. Archaeological sites where the remains of dogs have been discovered during excavations will be drawn on to explain the role of dogs in our past.
