Event Description

Learn how trauma reshapes the brain, affects memory and emotion, and how science guides healing and resilience. with Q&A

Trauma is a term that is increasingly widely used. It doesn’t just affect emotions; it rewires the brain and changes how we see and interact with the world around us. In this talk, Dr Michael Keane will explore the science of how trauma reshapes neural circuits involved in memory, emotion, and stress responding. Drawing on recent evidence, two decades of brain imaging, and unique aspects of trauma within the Irish experience, this session will explain why some individuals are more resilient while others remain vulnerable to trauma. Dr Micheal Keane will also discuss the brain’s capacity for recovery and present new approaches to therapy and self-care. This session is designed to demystify the science of trauma and how it shapes our understanding of the topic.

Dr Michael Keane holds degrees in Medicine and Psychology, and a PhD in Behavioural Neuroscience. He specialises in functional brain imaging using EEG. He has worked in hospital medicine, academia, clinical neuroscience, and performance sectors like the Premier League, UFC, and NFL. He is widely published, including a recent invitation to author the US Psychiatry Guidelines for the use of EEG and technology-assisted therapies. He has pioneered the latest advances in 3D functional brain imaging and brain optimisation technologies. Currently, he is the Chief Science Officer at Evolve Neuro, using AI and EEG to develop rapid brain testing for ADHD.
