Dr Lucy Hawkes obtained her PhD from the University of Exeter in 2007, in which she was the first person to track sea turtles from populations in North Carolina, USA, and the Cape Verde Islands. She has written over 60 scientific articles to date, which have been cited over 2300 times. The topic of migration fascinates her and she now works on a range of 'animal athletes', as she calls them. Her research centres on amazing migrations by some of the greatest animal athletes on the planet, including deep-diving basking sharks and high-flying bar-headed geese, which were once thought to migrate over the summit of Mount Everest. Hawkes loves seeing the world both during fieldwork and through these animals’ eyes.

This event is hosted by broadcaster and science communicator Greg Foot and presented as part of a new ongoing partnership between National Geographic and NI Science Festival.
